Flathead Catfish caught in the Minnesota River in 2007. The fish weighed 52lbs and was caught on a piece of cut sucker.
Not truly a monster in the Southern states, but a large fish for this neck of the woods.

good job letting that big boy go, it would have tasted awfull, besides that big ol’ cat is responsible for alot of eggs for the next generation. i kringe everytime i see a man take 7 or 8 fish like that and fill his freezers. ; [
@leowestdorp bigger flathead taste better than smaller ones since the smaller ones eat anything they can get ahold of and bigger one (10lbs +) eat only frogs and fish and sometimes crawdads so they have less toxins and the flathead is pretty active with not alot of fat on them.
@leowestdorp not really on yellow cats actually the bigger they are the better but on channels and blues you really dont wont them to eat over bout 25lbs because the meat is a little strong
Could someone tell me where that spot is? I’ve just started fishing the Minnesota and I’ve caught a few 20 pounders but nothing over that. Where are the monsters Hiding?
ok i got a few questions for ya. I want to catch these big cats. I live in Taylors Falls and i get decent cats on the st croix but i want to give the minnesota river a shot. i got the tackle for it i just need to know what bait to use in july for them cats or lat june and where can i launch to find these monsters please lemme know that would be awsome
@dserb333 In our neck of the woods, we have problems with larger fish absorbing toxins like mercury. Any flathead of this size is around 20 years of age, and that’s a long time to be absorbing toxins. The safest bet for an eater flathead is under 10 lbs. Personally, if I have a choice, I won’t harvest a flathead no matter what size, just too darn cool of a fish! Selective harvest, let the big ones go, keep a few of the smaller ones. Let them live to fight another day! Happy fishin!
Yep, I believe that fish does wieght that much, My little bro caught on two years ago in late fall while fishing for walley with a grub, believe it or not, that damn thing took in and the drag started screamin’. Over 1 1/2 hours with 10 lb mono line. finally got it in with no net. 49 inches and hell yeah over 50 lbs. We thought we snaged it but when it came in with its jaws wide open with the grub in the back of its throat.

@Buglemintoday More than likely Suffix or PowerPro. That’s what most of us use anyways…
